Knowing how to maintain your bike is crucial for both safety and performance. Here are three key bike maintenance skills that every cyclist should have in their toolkit:

1. Changing a Flat Tire

Being able to change one quickly and efficiently can save you from a long walk home or an expensive cab/uber ride, and in a race, you are expected to be self-sufficient and able to care of your own needs out on the race course. Quite simply, if you ride a bike, you should be able to change a flat tire.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Always carry a spare tube, tire levers, and a pump or CO2 inflator

  • Practice removing and replacing your wheel at home

  • Learn how to check for debris in the tire that might cause another puncture

  • Understand how to properly inflate your tire to the correct pressure

  • Mastering this skill will give you confidence on longer rides and in remote areas.

A clean, well-lubricated chain is essential for smooth shifting and efficient pedaling. Regular maintenance can also extend the life of your drivetrain components. Follow these steps:

  • Clean your bike, and wipe down your chain after every ride

  • Use a degreaser and chain cleaning tool for deeper cleans

  • Apply lubricant to a clean, dry chain

  • Wipe off excess lubricant to prevent dirt accumulation

  • A quiet, smooth-running chain makes for a fast and well-maintained bike.

  • Learn how to tighten loose brake cables

  • Understand how to center your brake pads on the rim or rotor

  • Recognize when it's time to replace worn brake pads
